Manny Pacquiao vs Joshua Clottey Fight Set on March 13, 2010

Pacquiao vs ClotteyTop-Promotions and Manny Pacquiao’s camp agreed to fight Joshua Clottey on March 13, 2010. This is the result of the failed negotiations of the megafight Pacquiao vs Mayweather. After both camps didn’t agree with the terms of the fight (specifically the method of drug testing), Bob Arum announced that the pound for pound king will be fighting against the Ghana-native boxer. When I read about this news, I really find it to be a very easy fight for the Filipino fighter. This conclusion is just based on Clottey’s fight against Miguel Cotto (who was beaten by Pacman on their last match).

However, this thinking changed when I heard Freddie Roach said that this match will be one of the best boxing event and Pacquiao will surely have a hard time with him compared to Mayweather. It will not be a boring fight – not directly said by him but this is what he is trying to say.

The said fight will be held at the Cowboys Stadium at Dallas but Arum doesn’t confirm yet if it will be featured in HBO or not.

Pacquiao camp says fight with Clottey set for March

TORONTO (Reuters) – WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao will put his title on the line against Ghanaian Joshua Clottey in March after talks for a bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr. fizzled out this week, the Filipino's promoter said on Friday.

The planned fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather Jr. broke down when negotiations between the two sides hit a snag over the American's demand for a rigorous dope testing procedure.

Pacquiao's new opponent beat Zab Judah of the United States for the IBF Welterweight title in August 2008 and lost a split decision to Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto last June.

"This is a better fight," Bob Arum of Top Rank, Pacquiao's promoter, told Reuters in a telephone interview. "(Clottey's) a real strong, aggressive and hard punching African from Ghana and he poses a real test for Manny."

Arum said a location for the fight would be decided on Monday.

News of the Pacquiao-Clottey bout pours cold water over talk that a match with Mayweather, which was expected to be one of boxing's biggest revenue-producing fights, could be salvaged in time for March.

Mayweather Jr. had issued a statement on Thursday that said he still wanted to fight Pacquiao, but Arum said any possible fight between the two sides would have to wait.

"There's always later in the year and there's next year, it's up to Mayweather. But if he starts this nonsense again with testing or anything then let him take a walk," said Arum.

"We are not going to get into a debate with him ever again on stuff that we know nothing about and that only regulators really can understand."

Mayweather's camp had called for random blood and urine sampling prior to and after the proposed fight with Pacquiao in March.

Pacquiao agreed to have blood taken for testing before the initial media conference and immediately after the fight but would not agree to have blood drawn within 30 days of the bout.

The commission that would have overseen the fight in Las Vegas only requires urine testing.

"We have commissions who regulate this sport, if (Mayweather Jr.) wants any special testing he should address it to the commission that will have jurisdiction over the fight," said Arum.

Pacquiao vs. Clottey March 13 at Cowboys Stadium

Pacquiao vs ClotteyManny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey will duke it out in Cowboys Stadium on March 13, according to a press release from Top Rank Inc. and the Dallas Cowboys late Sunday.

The El Paso Times reported on Saturday that Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Top Rank president Bob Arum were to meet over the weekend to finalize details for the welterweight title fight.

Arum was Jones' guest during the Cowboys victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in an NFC Wild Card game Saturday at Cowboys Stadium - which will be reconfigured for 40,000 on March 13.

Formal news conferences at Cowboys Stadium and in New York next week will provide details on tickets and the pay-per-view broadcast.

In a prepared statement, Jones said: "I have wanted to bring a major boxing event to North Texas for many years, so why not bring in the biggest and

the best? Manny Pacquiao is boxing's No. 1 pound for pound attraction and the world champion. Manny defending his title against Joshua Clottey is not just a great fight, it's a great event, and one we can showcase to the fullest in Cowboys Stadium. We're going to promote this like it was the Super Bowl."

Arum said: "Jerry Jones knows exactly how big and important this event is, which is why it was so easy to put this deal together. As a lifelong Giants fan I had to receive special dispensation from Steve Tisch, the Giants' Chairman and Executive Vice President, to bring this event to Cowboys Stadium and he blessed the deal. If Jerry could sell me on Cowboys Stadium and the North Texas market, you know he is going to have no problems selling out Cowboys Stadium on March 13. We are ready to roll up our sleeves and promote Manny's debut as World Welterweight Champion. Manny Pacquiao is the lone star of boxing. There isn't a more appropriate place in the world for him to fight!"

Pacquiao was to have fought Floyd Mayweather Jr. on March 13 in Las Vegas until negotiations fell apart last week.

It has been reported that Mayweather will fight Matthew Hatton - younger brother of Ricky Hatton - sometime in March.

Pacquiao vs Clottey March 13, 2009

It seems like the fight is off between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

To be honest, I still have a gut feeling the fight will be made. Yes, call me delusional or whatever you like, but the fight is too huge not to be made.

Nevertheless, Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach has just informed ESPN's Brian Kenny that Manny Pacquiao is now scheduled to face Joshua Clottey.

I verified in BoxRec, and apparently the fight between Pacquiao and Clottey is official.

The fight is scheduled to take place March 13, 2010 at the MGM Grand. Essentially, everything has stayed the same except Mayweather has been substituted for Clottey.

Despite all this, Clottey stated that he has yet to receive a contract or information from Pacquiao’s camp.

To be honest, the fight is not a bad one. But anything less than Mayweather vs. Pacquiao is a spit to boxing in my opinion.

So will Mayweather follow suit and substitute his opponent with the likes of Malignaggi or Foreman?

Let’s hope all these are just rumors and both fighters continue negotiations.

Perhaps Pacquiao and Roach are bluffing to get Mayweather to back off his demands of “Olympic-style drug testing?"

Pacquiao vs. Clottey

So let’s assume the fight between Clottey and Pacquiao goes on as planned.

Who wins?

Clottey is by no means a pushover or a “tune-up” fighter.

He gave Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito everything they could handle. Some even believe he could have beaten both had he not broken his hand (Margarito fight) and had he been more active in the final rounds (Cotto fight).

Plus at this point, Pacquiao has more to lose than Clottey does.

Pacquiao is considered the best fighter in the world, and everything could come crashing down with a loss to Clottey.

I am not implying he will lose, but Clottey is a very live underdog.

At this point anything can happen; maybe Mayweather will sign a fight with Cotto in a couple of days?

Pacquiao vs Clottey - Not a Good Fight

Manny Pacquiao is likely defend his WBO welterweight title against Ghanaian Joshua Clottey. The former International Boxing Federation champion Clottey will no doubt be thrilled with the announcement that Pacquiao’s proposed “super fight” with Floyd Mayweather fell through. For boxing fans though it’s a totally different story. A disappointment, a letdown, a disgrace. Why pick an opponent who, while putting in a good effort again Miguel Cotto was eventually beaten. And the world saw what happened when Cotto faced the “Pac-man”.

Is Pacquiao vs Clottey the most attractive fight Bob Arum could find? They may as well have staged a 3rd contest between Pacquiao and Marquez, which would have probably been a more competitive fight than this one. This bout looks set to be happening on March 13th. With no disrespect to Clottey, what chance does he have to beat a man who so convincingly outclassed Miguel Cotto? It seems as if the bout will have to happen in March, which rules out the chance of Pacquiao facing the winner of Mosley vs Berto, which is a shame but the winner of that fight surely has to fight Floyd Mayweather.

Speaking of Mayweather, it is possible he will be fighting either Paulie Malignaggi or Britain’s Matthew Hatton. Both fighters a genuinely nice guys and no disrespect to them, but the difference in class is staggering. Malignaggi and Mayweather and two defensively minded fighters would like to hit and move, therefore their styles probably wont result in an exciting fight. Mayweather is a master of making exciting fighters, fight an ordinary fight. People will eventually lose interest in the dream match Pacquiao/Mayweather and focus on other fights which could possibly be made. Every day that passes where Pacquiao and Mayweather don’t fight, they’ll be losing money.

Clottey and Malignaggi are decent fighters, but they aren’t in the class of Pacquiao or Mayweather. So whether this is promotional hype or genuine problems that can not be settled, it is a disgrace.
