GRAPEVINE, Texas ( MindaNews/08 March) - Up to now, Joshua Clottey has not made any definitive claims he’s going to win the welterweight title fight against Manny Pacquiao this Saturday ( Sunday in the Philippines) at the Cowboys Dallas Stadium.
But a much closer understanding of his statements shortly after his workout today at the Gaylord Texan Hotel in this city shows it might turn out to be a totally different fight for the Pacman so far.
Unlike Pacquiao’s previous opponents, Clottey can withstand a combination of punches targetting his chin.
“I have a good chin, it comes natural for me, he said, stressing that “unless you take time to connect,” Pacquiao can’t get me by throwing many punches.
He also claims his answer to Pacquiao’s being a south paw is his right hand punching. “I have a sharp right hand, and can throw it from afar. So it’s always dangerous.”
Clottey (35-3, 21 KOs) is a natural welterweight compared to Pacquiao who has to add more pounds for the 147 pounds weight ceiling. But the Ghanaian boxer said he will add on more pounds after the weigh in, making him more formidable upon entering the ring on fight night.
He also has a strange strategy of not watching any of the tapes of the Pacman’s previous fights. “ I never watch any of Pacquiao’s tapes, he said, adding “I concentrate more to become more fit for the fight.
His workout today consists of doing the ropes, shadow boxing and a display of some combination of punches with his trainer around the ring.
Clottey is a native of Accra, Ghana, and is now fighting out of Bronx, New York. He won the International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight title in 2008 by defeating three-time world champion Zab Judah. He also won over two-division world champion Diego Corrales and undefeated contender Richard Guttierez, and a close decision loss to to world champion Antonio Margarito.
He, however, lost a controversial split decision to defending WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto. Clottey is presently rated No. 1 by the WBO and No. 4 by the World Boxing Association (WBA).
Pacquiao ( 50-3-2, 38 KOs) will be defending the WBO welterweight title he snatched from three-time world champion Miguel Cotto via a 12th round knockout on May 2, 2009.
Addressing the millions of Filipinos rooting for Pacquiao, the Ghanaian boxer said he highly respects the seven weight division world title holder, but confidently predicts its going to be a “ very very close fight for both of us, so watch us very closely.”
Clottey warned the first round will be the most crucial round for him. “After the first round, we’ll gonna know what’s gonna happen.”
