The Dallas Cowboys' season ended on Sunday, but Jerry Jones isn't wasting any time finding other uses for his billion-dollar stadium: Cowboys Stadium sent out a press release today to formally announce that it's hosting a March 13 boxing match between Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey.
"We are really just now getting into our business here, but we're excited about doing this fight," Jones said last week, when word first came out that the fight was going to happen at Cowboys Stadium. "Personally, I am very, very, very excited to be holding our very first boxing event."
But while Jones is excited, the diminishing number of Americans who follow boxing are disappointed that Pacquiao is fighting Clottey, and not Floyd Mayweather Jr. A Pacquiao-Mayweather fight would have been among the biggest in boxing history, and Jones offered $25 million to get that fight at Cowboys Stadium.
Talks between Mayweather and Pacquiao ultimately broke down over issues unreleated to the venue, and now Cowboys Stadium will host Pacquiao against Clottey. Presumably, Jones is spending a lot less than $25 million to get a lesser fight. Maybe that's how he can afford to overpay Roy Williams.
